Lesson Plans

Week 1

March 23, 2021

Art piece of the day->Virtual Pilsen Mural Gallery (10 min)- https://interactive.wttw.com/my-neighborhood/pilsen/murals

Privilege Activity on Padlet

Instructions: Create a new post by clicking on the plus sign at the bottom right.

For the title, please enter your name. Myrriah (Professor) and I (Student Teacher) will also participate.

I am going to read a series of statements where I will ask you to take a step forward or a step back. Since we are in a virtual setting, we cannot literally take a step forward or back. So, instead, I will ask you to add a plus sign to symbolize a step forward or a minus to symbolize a step back.  Whenever you add a new sign press enter and add it to another line. If the statement does not apply to you, don’t add a symbol or line.

Lets Start

Source for questions

http://doloreshuerta.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/privilege-walk.pdf

Also ask

If your community has been impacted by environmental disasters take a step back.

If children are safe playing outside in your community take a step forward.

If you or your family have had to rely on social welfare programs for food, housing, or care, take a step back.

Reminder about magazines next week

Conclusion: We are done for today. Take 5-10 minutes to write the reflection on Learn. You will find it under journal.

March 25, 2021

Art piece of the day La Bruja- La Bruja (Parodia)

Break into pairs to discuss what you wrote. And answer these questions: What was your greatest takeaway from the privilege activity? What was something you realized or learned about your own privilege? How will you use your privilege to tear down the fence?

Share as a whole class

Initial thoughts, comments, etc. Common themes or ideas.

How can we use our privilege to break down barriers while simultaneously reinforcing the societal hierarchy we are a part of?

How does privilege or lack of play into your identity?

*Reminder about collage next week

Conclusion: add a paragraph as a comment on your journal reflecting on any new thought ideas. Something that had not occurred to you before.

Notes: This activity went very well. The students had great insights and reflections about their own privilege and how to use it. The anonymity of answers to questions was also something the student appreciated. This will be something to try to maintain if this activity is done in an in-person class.

Week 2

March 30, 2021

Art piece of the day- Tonacihuatl como Mayahuel

Instructions: Create a collage using any materials you like that are representative of how you have come to understand your identity and your role in your community?

Questions to consider: What symbols, colors, imagery do you identify with? What is one thing you wish everyone knew or understood about you? What about the class? What are things you keep hidden?  What is your relational identity with the Term Chicano? How do you understand this identity?

April 1, 2021

Art piece of the day-La Paloma by Eugenia León

Instructions: We will each show our collage one at a time. First, the others will comment on what they see what they like what they recognize, etc. Then the artist will explain the process, the meaning, etc.

Notes: On March 30 we worked in class on the collages while listening to music and talking. It was nice to be able to share that space with the students. In the future, it may be better to prepare questions for the discussion since it was hard to get the students talking.

Week 3

April 6, 2021

Art piece of the day-Pinche Malinche

Finish Collage Sharing

Discussion Questions: What were some themes you guys saw in the collages? We all study at UNM, most of us live in New Mexico, many of us live in Albuquerque? We have a regional or place-based identity that is similar but not the same. How is that reflected in our collages?

This is true of Chicanos. We are all different. But like we can find commonality through human experience Chicanos find commonality in a shared culture, history, etc.  What are some of our shared experiences?

For Homework: Read How to tame a wild tongue, Pick 2-3 quotes you would like to discuss, and make a sketch. While reading we have images in our head that come up with visualizations of the reading, especially when the reading has descriptions or imagery. It can be anything and it only has to be one.

April 8, 2021

Art piece of the day Virgin of Controversy

Instructions: First we will break into small groups to share quotes and images, then discuss as a class.

You will have 10 min to share your quotes, talk about why you chose those quotes, and what kind of imagery came to your mind while reading How to Tame a Wild Tongue? Share your drawings.

Share small group discussions with the large group.

Questions to discuss: What is the connection between the figurative and literal in the dentist scene and a wild tongue?

Who owns language? Can language be mutilated? In what ways can the phrase "Lingustic Terrorist" be interpreted?

Note: This week's workshops went very well.  Students had great insights and enjoyed the reading.

Week 4

April 13, 2021

NO WORKSHOP

April 15, 2021

Art Piece of the day-Death Enthroned

Instrcutions: We will view two videos as a class.  Write down things that surprise you or questions you have for the class.

Chicano 2.0: Queer Xicanas | mitú

World's First LGBTQ Mariachi Band?

Discussion questions: What does it mean that people ask The Mariachi Arcoiris what type of show they do? What does this say of how gender and sexuality are performative or the assumptions we make about LGBTQ peoples?

Note: This week was a bit relaxed because my public presentation was Tuesday.

Week 5

20, 2021

Art piece of the day-Pink Sewsaws

Instructions: Break out into pairs and look at poems on this website;  https://www.poetryfoundation.org/collections/144265/poems-on-immigration

Pick one and tell us what it made you feel, why you chose it, why was it memorable?

Large group discussion: Share the name of the poem you picked and why you picked it.

Now think of your own migration story. How did you get to the U.S. or New Mexico, or wherever you are now? Have you always lived there? What about your parents/grandparents? What about the other people in your community?  What about that place makes it your home? Take notes on these questions you can use words, phrases, images, or anything you like to represent your answer.

For Homework write a poem about your own migration story. If you are unsure how to format it feel free to use the "I Am From"template or a blackout poem.

April 22, 2021

Art piece of the day-Libertad

Instructions: We are going to start by going around and reading all of our poems. Then we will have an informal discussion.

Questions for discussion: What feelings came up while writing the poems? What questions/challenges did you have while writing the poems? Did you realize anything about yourself? When thinking about some of the topics we have discussed in the class such as privilege, intersectionality, identity, what themes came up in your poems?

Note: Poetry writing went well. The students wrote beautiful poems. The discussion went very slow until the last question. Change questions in the future.

Week 6

April 27, 2021

Art Piece-Sun Mad

Instructions: This week we will be having the Labor Debate the question is "Should we increase the minimum wage to $15 nationwide?"

In preparation for your debate write an opening statement with your group and decide who will read it. Also, think of 3-5 questions you would like to ask the opposing side. It may help you to make a list of pros and cons, and search for more information in support of your arguments.

Here are some resources you can use to start your research:

https://minimum-wage.procon.org/

https://www.investopedia.com/articles/markets-economy/090516/what-are-pros-and-cons-raising-minimum-wage.asp

Here are both sides of the $15 minimum wage debate

Should The Minimum Wage Be Increased to $15? Pros Vs Cons of Raising the Minimum Wage to 15 dollars

You have the rest of today and the beginning of the next class to prepare. Myrriah and I will be around if you need anything.

April 29, 2021

Instructions: Pro side will read its opening statement the Con side will read its opening statement. The Pro will ask its first question, the con side will answer, the pro side can rebutal. In this way, we will make our way through as many questions as possible until the debate time is up. Myrriah and I will serve as moderators.

Debrief on the experience. Did you agree with your argument? What was the experience like? What did you learn from the experience?

Notes: The debate went very well. Most of the class was actually for increasing minimum wage but the Con side prepared very well and the whole class recognized this. We came to several interesting conclusions as a group in our debriefing.

Week 7

May 4, 2021

Art piece of the day-La Malinche

Instructions: You will be preparing a 3 min oral presentation on your art analysis paper topics to share with the class like the UROC 180 style presentations.

In three minutes introduce your research topic, your method, and why it matters. The key is to keep your audience engaged and that they understand your research. You have an advantage; we have all taken this class together and will therefore be more informed than the general public. One suggestion is to take your abstract and turn it into a 3min speech by changing some of the language.

May 6, 2021

Instructions: Everyone take a min to prepare. Drink some water, take a deep breath. I want everyone to imagine you're giving this presentation to a room full of professors, researchers, and other academics because you may have to one day.

Let's first decide the order of presenters.

We will have everyone present their pitch, and I will time you. Write down some strengths and weaknesses for each presenter as well as questions or comments. We will go one by one taking a minute pause in between in order to finish writing any comments.
